Dr. Shoptaw to discuss Heart Disease

February is American Heart Month – a time set aside to raise awareness about heart disease in the United States. Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women. Every year, about 715,000 Americans have a heart attack.  Some 600,000 people die from heart disease.  That’s 1 out of every 4 deaths.

This month’s “Dine with the Docs” features James H. Shoptaw., Jr., M.D., cardiothoracic and vascular surgeon who will discuss heart disease. His program is entitled, “Failing to Prepare is Preparing to Fail.”

The public meeting will be held on Tuesday, February 11, in the Conference Center at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital on the basement level of the East Tower. 

Beginning at 5:00 p.m., members of the Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital Chest Pain Team will be in the lower lobby of the hospital to provide free cardiac risk assessments for attendees.

A complimentary dinner will be provided in Chatters Café at 5:30 p.m. and the program will follow at 6:30 p.m.

The term “heart disease” refers to several types of heart conditions.  The most common type in the U. S. is coronary artery disease which can cause heart attack, angina, heart failure, and arrhythmias.  Dr. Shoptaw will discuss these and other conditions, and will provide information on prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. A question and answer session will follow his presentation.

Dr. Shoptaw is a cum laude graduate of the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, Georgia, where he earned his medical degree.  He completed both a residency in general surgery and a two-year Cardiothoracic Fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas.

A Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, Dr. Shoptaw is board-certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery. He is also a member of the DeBakey Society of Surgeons and has been ranked in the top 5% of surgeons in the United States for Overall Cardiac Services and Cardiac Surgery.

“Dine with the Docs” is a regular monthly program series developed to educate interested persons regarding important health issues.  The programs are sponsored as a public service by Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital and the Lake Cumberland Chapter of Senior Friends.
