Healthcare Hero: Jamie Stamper, RN
April 23, 2020
Over the next few weeks, we'll be introducing the community to some of Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital's Healthcare Heroes.
We hope you enjoy getting to know them and learning more about what life looks like on the frontlines of the coronavirus at LCRH.
TODAY'S FEATURED HERO:
Jamie Stamper, RN
Q: How long have you worked here?
A: I started as an ER Tech over two years ago, and now I'm a registered nurse and work night shift in the emergency department.
Q: What would you be doing if you weren’t working in healthcare?
A: I was a server/bartender for over ten years before I got my nursing degree, but I always knew I wanted to be a nurse. Talking with people and being of service to others is who I am and what I was meant for.
Q: What does a typical day look like for you at Lake Cumberland?
A: A typical day in the ER starts with a quick huddle to prepare for the hours ahead. The ER is anything but “typical,” you never know what to expect! We get bedside report from day shift and then it’s basically nonstop for the next 12 hours. Stroke, chest pain, trauma, respiratory, and mental health are just a handful of reasons people come to the ER, and quite often we can be caring for all of those at the same time.
Q: How has your day-to-day changed since the coronavirus pandemic?
A: The coronavirus pandemic hasn’t really changed the day-to-day in the ER. Yes, we’re all wearing more PPE than normal and protocols are ever changing, but we are still treating and caring for our patients as we always have. It's so important for the public to know that they can and should still come to the ER for emergencies, especially heart attacks and strokes, when every single minute makes a difference to your health. It's safe to come here because we've taken all of the necessary precautions to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
Q: What’s saving your life right now?
A: Without my family and my amazing coworkers I’d never make it some days! My coworkers have seen me at my worst and my best and vice versa. We laugh together and cry together. I couldn’t possibly do this job without them. And SNACKS...snacks are the real MVP.
