TODAY'S FEATURED HERO:
Leslie Chambers, APRN
Q: What is your role at LCRH and how long have you worked here?
A: I have been with LCRH since 2010, first as an ICU RN, then open heart recovery nurse, and now an APRN with general surgery.
Q: What would you be doing if you weren't working in healthcare?
A: I really have no idea! I couldn’t imagine doing anything else. I love taking care of those who need me and doing my best to ensure they return home to the families who love them.
Q: How has your day-to-day changed since the coronavirus pandemic?
A: We have had to cancel all elective surgical procedures. This has decreased our workload slightly but there are always surgical consults and surgical emergencies that need to be taken care of very quickly. The major difference is the steps we now must take to protect ourselves, our patients, and our families.
Q: What made you want to travel to NYC to help during the pandemic?
A: With so many people hurting and suffering in New York, especially fellow healthcare providers, I asked God to show me a way that I could help. He opened doors very quickly and within 3 days of making the decision, I was on a plane for New York! I hope this will prepare me to better serve those in our community when we are hit with the devastation of this horrible virus. I also hope that by helping other communities, the favor will be returned when we are faced with the same dire situation. I am but a tool to be used in God’s plan and I am grateful for the opportunity to lend my knowledge along with a helping hand.
Q: What's saving your life right now?
A: My faith, my family, and my co-workers. My husband and my three daughters have graciously agreed to share me with the people of NY. It takes a special family to support you while you leave them behind to go fight a battle that places you directly in harm’s way. My great friend/co-worker, Madisyn Epperson PA-C, has stepped up to take care of my share of the work while I’m helping others in crisis. The surgeons, Dr. Shelton and Dr. Stivers, were also supportive of my decision. I am blessed to be surrounded by so many selfless people in my life!
