Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital Unveils Newly Renovated Cardiac Catheterization Lab
August 14, 2024

Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital (LCRH) proudly announces the renovation of its third cardiac catheterization (cath) lab. This over $2 million investment includes structural upgrades and innovative equipment with enhanced imaging capabilities. These improvements enable quicker and more efficient cardiovascular disease diagnosis and treatment, reducing radiation exposure for patients and medical staff.
“With three cardiac cath labs, six credentialed cardiologists, a dedicated 12-bed inpatient cardiovascular unit, and an experienced team of nurses, radiology techs, and other cardiac care experts, we are well-equipped to meet the heart health needs of our community,” said LCRH Interim Chief Executive Officer Carolyn Sparks.
Heart disease remains the leading cause of death in Kentucky and the United States. While prevention through diet, exercise, and smoking cessation is crucial, the recent renovation of our third cath lab represents a significant advancement in Kentucky's fight against heart disease. "We are proud to enhance our capacity to meet the needs of our growing community,” added Sparks.
Lake Cumberland’s three cath labs treat approximately 3,800 patients annually, offering a range of interventional procedures such as pacemaker and stent insertions, blood clot removal in the lungs, and treatment of heart blockages. The hospital’s emergency department is integrated with the local EMS, enabling faster treatment for heart attack patients through a STEMI Alert system.
As an American College of Cardiology Accredited Chest Pain Center with Primary PCI, LCRH emphasizes standardized diagnostic and treatment programs for more efficient and rapid care of patients with chest pain and heart attack symptoms. The hospital’s PCI designation highlights its use of percutaneous coronary intervention as a primary treatment for heart attacks. Additionally, LCRH benefits from advanced cardiovascular education and training through its affiliation with UK’s Gill Heart & Vascular Institute.
