Celebrating Family in Healthcare at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital
May 12, 2025

At Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital (LCRH), the spirit of healthcare resonates deeply through the shared experiences of families who dedicate their lives to service. This story shines a spotlight on the inspiring bond between mothers and their children as they navigate the intricate world of healthcare together.
Debbie Laman, BSN, CASC, director of the Lake Cumberland Surgery Center, expresses immense pride in her daughter Katy’s choice to pursue a career in nursing. “All of my children have a servant’s heart. When Katy Roy, RN, decided to enter nursing, I knew she would flourish,” Debbie reflects. From caring for her wounded dolls and pets as a child, Katy’s compassion has always been evident.
Debbie believes her dedication to nursing has influenced her children’s aspirations. “They’ve seen my commitment in various roles, from bedside nursing to leadership. I hope my journey shows them that with a heart for caring and hard work, nursing can take you anywhere,” she shared.
Katy, now an ER nurse, acknowledges her mother’s influence. “My mom always encouraged us to pursue stable, fulfilling careers. With my passion for caring for people, nursing felt like the perfect fit,” Katy explains.
One of Katy’s fond memories occurred during her first days in the ER when a patient recognized her from childhood photos in her mother’s office. “It showed me how much of a family environment LCRH fosters,” she recalls.
Melissa Walden, PTA, beams with pride as she watches her daughter Samantha Saylor, RN, BSN, SCRN, embark on her healthcare journey. “When Samantha expressed interest in healthcare, I felt an overwhelming sense of pride. I always knew she had a good heart,” Melissa shares.
Reflecting on her career's impact on Samantha, Melissa hopes her daughter sees her dedication and the difference she made in others' lives. “I want her to carry that same passion for helping others,” she adds.
Samantha, currently the nursing director of the neuro unit at LCRH, credits her mother's compassion as a significant motivator in her career path. “My mom has always inspired me through her caring nature. She's a role model for how to provide compassionate care,” Samantha says.
Being able to work alongside her mother brings Samantha joy, as she often visits her previous patients who have transitioned to her mom’s unit. “It’s wonderful to share that she’s my mom!” she beams.
A unique aspect of their relationship is the ability to consult each other on medical questions. “If there's anything I don’t understand, I know I can call her anytime,” Melissa notes.
Both Debbie and Samantha highlight the importance of striking a balance in healthcare. Samantha adds, “It’s a give and take. While work can demand a lot, family always comes first, and then your work family follows.”
Sandy Russell, MSN, RN, SANE, Director of Staff Development, who began her career at LCRH in 1999, directly influenced her son Jason Russell’s (PharmD) career choice. “Seeing my mom’s enthusiasm and the impact she made in healthcare from my earliest memories solidified my desire to pursue it as well,” Jason shares.
With Sandy's support, Jason shadowed at LCRH during high school and began his career there while in college. “If I hadn’t witnessed her passion and dedication, I might not be here today,” he states.
After 17 years at LCRH, Jason appreciates the special connection of working in the same hospital as his mother. “Every day, I see her just a short walk away, and it adds a pride to my work. I know I'm upholding the legacy she built,” he reflects.
Sandy has always been a strong example of how to balance a demanding career with family life. “No matter how shifting my schedule was, she made time for family. She was present at every game and school event, teaching me about dedication both at work and home,” Jason shares.
When discussing advice for future healthcare professionals, Sandy emphasizes the importance of service. “You should choose this career only if you have a genuine desire to help others. It’s not just a job; it’s about compassion,” she advises.
As all these families look toward the future, there's a shared feeling of belonging and commitment to Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital. Debbie concludes, “I see myself finishing my career here, and Katy and I continuing to work together in the future." Melissa shares, “Samantha and I consider LCRH our home away from home.” Jason adds, “It’s a privilege to work alongside my mom, and I aspire to keep building on the foundation she laid.”
Together, these families demonstrate that at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital, the commitment to compassionate care extends beyond the professional realm—it’s rooted in familial bonds, shared experiences, and dedication to improving the community's health. Their stories reflect a heartfelt legacy of service, showcasing how love, support, and a shared mission in healthcare can inspire future generations.
